Halloween may be over, but my ghostly adventures are here to stay—because this year, I went full “sheet ghost,” and let me tell you, it was a hauntingly good time! You can’t beat this costume: it’s simple, it’s budget-friendly, and it’s as timeless as Halloween itself. But let me walk you through the unexpected thrills (and spills) of putting together a ghost costume at the last minute in Bangkok, where a simple white sheet is not as easy to come by as you might think…
First things first, the “sheet” for my ghostly look. Ideally, a single piece of fabric would do the trick—if only it were that simple! If you’re lucky enough to live near a fabric store, great; they can measure you up and have you ready to go in minutes. However, the sprawling lifestyle paradise of Fashion Island Mall, my go-to for almost everything, was suspiciously void of fabric stores.
So, I took a daring turn to Big C and found… drumroll… a white cloth meant for straining soups! It’s a modest 50×100 cm—perfect for your ghostly needs if you’re, say, three feet tall. So, I grabbed two, thinking that surely 100×200 cm would be more than enough for a 5’4” ghost, right? Wrong! Cue my freak-out moment as I realized I was about as covered as a two-dimensional apparition. Thankfully, a late-night delivery saved my ghost dreams when, at 9 p.m., some miracle workers with spare cloth came to my rescue.
No self-respecting ghost should have blank, staring eye holes—this is where the mesh comes in! But alas, Fashion Island was also a mesh-free zone. After what felt like a marathon circuit around the mall, I was about ready to abandon the ghost altogether. But then… I stumbled upon Daiso. And there it was: a black mesh bag, the answer to my Halloween prayers! At 60 baht, it was an absolute steal, and with a few snips, my ghost had eyes (through which I could, conveniently, also see!).
Now, if you’re lucky enough to get one solid piece of white fabric, you can skip this part. But with my quilt-like arrangement of eight individual cloths, stitching became essential. After wrestling with about three meters of haphazard sewing, I called it quits on the needle and thread front and settled for glue for the eyes—because we all have our limits, right?
And voila! Despite the hiccups, what emerged was a charming, ghostly ensemble that I am proud to say was entirely “homemade” (with a sprinkle of last-minute panic). Not too hard, but not exactly effortless, either. So, if you’re inspired to go spooky next year, just know that with a little creativity (and maybe a dash of stubbornness), you, too, can become a budget-friendly, adorable Halloween ghost. Or hey, there are always other costumes to consider!
Here are some photos of my ghostly transformation process. Enjoy!
